LOGAN, UTAH , November 19, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) ─ A 911 call to Logan Police Thursday afternoon reporting a man threatening to shoot a gun inside a Walmart turned out to be a hoax by someone hoping to divert attention.

The call came in around 1:45 according to Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen. He quoted the caller as saying there was a “man with a gun, yelling he was going to shoot” inside the Walmart at 1150 S. Main.

Officers sent to the scene quickly determined there was no threat of violence inside the store.

Investigators were able to identify a suspect in the false report. Chief Jensen says it appears a man stopped for minor traffic violations made the 9-1-1 call because he feared arrest after giving the patrolman “false information.” The suspect allegedly wanted to “lure the officer to a more important public safety call.”

Police tracked the suspect down to his home in Logan but he has refused to talk with officers. Negotiation are still ongoing with the suspect.
