LOGAN, Utah, May 1, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 22-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to time in Utah State Prison after being convicted of attempted forcible abuse of a 15-year-old girl in a Cache County mall.

Ariq Shakel Mayo pleaded guilty to attempted forcible sexual abuse, a third-degree felony, in exchange for the dismissal of a second charge of lewdness, a class B misdemeanor.

According to court records, the charges stem from a March 10, 2017, incident. Cache County prosecutor Jake Gordon told Gephardt Daily that Mayo exposed his genitals at the Cache Valley Mall, then climaxed onto a 15-year-old girl seated in one of several massage chairs located in an open part of the mall.

Gordon has characterized the incident as “vile.”

Judge Kevin Allen noted conclusions from a pretrial report that said Mayo expressed no remorse for his actions and took no responsibility.

Allen also told Mayo he was aware of a phone call Mayo made from jail about the case, stating he would claim insanity if he needed to, “because it worked last time.”
