SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 14, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah’s Lt. Governor Spencer Cox says he is running for Utah’s top job, hoping to replace sitting Gov. Gary Herbert who has already said he will not run for another term.
Cox, 43, made the announcement Tuesday morning by way of his Twitter account.
“Ok friends…@AbbyPalmerCox and I want you to know first. Itâs time. Weâve decided to run for Governor – and we can’t do it without you! Please visit (link: http://VoteCox.com) VoteCox.com to join the team and donate. Oh and please retweet. Letâs go. #VoteCox”
Cox also released an online video, featuring his wife, Abby, as they discussed their family’s deep Utah ties and their motivation for running.
“It’s no secret our country has some trouble right now,” Cox said. “We’re more divided than we’ve ever been at any time since the Civil War and when we talk about solutions it really is about all of us looking for ways to better our communities. Utah is where we do that better than anywhere else and we have an opportunity to set an example for the rest of the country.”
Cox started his political career as a city councilman in his hometown of Fairview, Utah.
He ultimately became mayor there before later being elected as Sanpete County commissioner.
Cox was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 2012 before being selected to replace Greg Bell as lieutenant governor in 2013.
He accepted the lieutenant governor’s position, but continues to reside in Fairview, where his family has lived for seven generations. He currently commutes 200 miles a day.
