DRAPER, Utah, July 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 39-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning after police say he broke down a door and burglarized the apartment of a friend’s mother, a woman officers described as a disabled amputee.
Police responded to an apartment complex at 14075 S. Bangerter Parkway. The Ivy specializes in housing for ages 55 and older.
“Dispatch advised that a man broke the victim’s door down and entered her apartment. I was further advised that the suspect grabbed onto the victim and began searching through her belongings,” says an affidavit filed by an officer of the Draper City Police Department.
“He then entered the restroom and began drinking alcohol. Upon arrival, I observed the suspect standing in the threshold of the apartment door.”
Police took 39-year-old Richard Paul Goodwin Shaw into custody at 2:26 a.m., court documents say.
“The victim stated that the suspect was a friend of her son’s. She had allowed him to stay at the apartment in the past, but had recently made it clear to him that he was not welcome in her apartment,” the affidavit says.
The woman said Shaw broke down the door to make entry. She had been asleep in bed “and was woken by a loud ‘boom.’ I observed damage to the door jamb and pieces of broken wood were lying on the floor.”
The victim “is a disabled amputee who is terrified of the suspect and made multiple statements that she believes that he will return if released from jail,” the affidavit says.
Shaw was booked into jail for investigation of burglary of a dwelling, a second-degree felony. He was ordered held without bail.
