MILLCREEK, Utah, Oct. 13, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man is in custody and law enforcement is still on scene after a tense standoff in Millcreek where a man, suspected of assaulting a child and firing a gun at the child’s father, had barricaded himself in a house.

Unified Police Department officers and SWAT spent nearly six hours Sunday working to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.

UPD tweeted at 5:30 p.m. that the situation was unfolding in the area of Gordon Lane and 4350 South.

The incident began at about 3:05 p.m., UPD Detective Kevin Mallory told Gephardt Daily.

“A couple of juveniles were riding dirt bikes near Doreen and Gordon in Millcreek,” Mallory said. “They were confronted by a male who assaulted one of them.

“When one of the parents came out, the male fired a gun at the parent.”

The child who was assaulted is 6 years old, and the child’s father said the suspect punched the boy in the head with as much force as would be used on an adult.

The man, who Mallory said is in his 50s, then ran into a house and barricaded himself inside.

Police negotiators were already on scene by 6 p.m., and SWAT also was responding.

The suspect was taken into custody at about 8:30 p.m.

Mallory said the man will be interviewed before charges are filed, and officials will probably obtain a search warrant for the home.

Gephardt Daily will continue to follow this story and will provide more details as they are made available.
