SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, April 7, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A man is in custody Friday night after fleeing from a Utah Highway Patrol trooper, and police are still looking for the woman who was with him.

In a news release Friday night, UHP said the incident began at approximately 8:30 p.m., when a trooper saw a silver Jeep Patriot parked in traffic under the Interstate 15 structure on 1300 South.

The trooper thought the driver may need assistance and stopped to help. There was no one in the Jeep, and witnesses told the trooper that a man and a woman had just left the vehicle and they smelled of alcohol.

The trooper saw a man and woman a short distance away and went to speak to them, but they ran from him. A short while later, the trooper found the man and arrested him. The woman is still unidentified and has not been located yet, the news release states.

The Jeep was stolen out of West Jordan. Drug paraphernalia was found inside, and a handgun-style pellet gun that closely resembled a firearm was under the driver seat of the Jeep.

UHP said the Jeep was disabled because it had apparently been damaged in some sort of collision.
