SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 23, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has been taken into custody in connection with a carjacking in Salt Lake City last Thursday of a vehicle with a 4-year-old girl inside.
A probable cause statement from the Third District Court of Salt Lake County said Derek Louis Orr, 29, was taken into custody Thursday morning and is facing a charge of robbery, a second-degree felony. Orr is being held in Salt Lake County Jail with his bail set at $20,000.
The carjacking occurred May 16 when a woman was driving in the area of 2100 South and 700 East with her 4-year-old daughter.
The suspect, later identified as Orr, allegedly approached the car, entered and forcibly removed the woman from the car.
“The A/P (accused person) then drove off in the car with the victim’s 4-year-old daughter still inside,” the statement said. “The A/P then dropped off the victim’s daughter at a local business several blocks away. The A/P later dropped off the car on the east side of SLC where it was later located.”
Video images of Orr were released and police received tips identifying the suspect. Orr was located on Thursday morning at an address in West Grove Avenue in Salt Lake City and, after a standoff with police, was taken into custody.
Orr was interviewed and after being read his Miranda rights, admitted to taking the car, dropping off the child and leaving the vehicle on the east side, the statement said.
“The A/P indicated he was in a drug induced haze at the time of these events,” the statement said.
