SANDY, Utah, July 27, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 58-year-old man who said he arranged to fight a fellow resident of a homeless center told police he came “prepared,” and that he did stab the victim.
That’s according to an affidavit filed in the July 25 arrest of Larry Repass. He was arrested for investigation of:
- Aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony
- Possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, a third-degree felony
- Threat/use of dangerous weapon in fight, a class A misdemeanor
Charges will be determined by the Salt Lake County Attorney’s Office.
The “mutual fight” took place under the Interstate 15 northbound overpass near 450 W. 9000 South, the affidavit says.
“Larry James Repass brandished a folding knife and stabbed the victim in the abdomen causing a serious stab wound that required the victim to be transported to the hospital, where the victim was operated on after the wound was determined to be serious in nature,” Repass’ affidavit says.
“Post Miranda Warnings, Repass stated he came to the fight ‘prepared’ and that he did stab the victim, and that he could have killed the victim if he really wanted to.
“Witnesses stated that Repass put on gloves just prior to stabbing the victim in the abdomen, which I know from experience and training that one may do this to have better grip on the knife and not cut one’s own self with the knife while stabbing someone.
“The victim defended himself from Repass’ stabbing and was able to subdue Repass, resulting in no further injury to the victim. Both Repass and the victim are residents of the MVP Homeless Shelter in Sandy.”
The Sandy MVP (Medically Vulnerable People) Shelter is the same facility, a former Econo Lodge, where a woman was found deceased, with blunt force trauma to her head, in May of this year. Her roommate, 60-year-old Laura Darlene Northrup, was arrested in the case for investigation of murder.
The arresting officer in Repass’ case said he “made numerous statements bragging about how ‘bad’ he was, based on his criminal record, and how dangerous he really could have been to the victim.”
Repass, who has no ties to Utah, was ordered to be held without bail.
