ST. GEORGE, Utah, May 12, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Southern Utah man has been arrested in connection with vandalism of the St. George temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Charles Gregory Logan, was taken into custody on charges of:

  • Disorderly conduct — fight, violence, threat
  • Assault
  • Criminal mischief
  • Burglary of a non-dwelling

Logan was booked into the Washington County Jail, and later was released from custody after posting bail. A probable cause statement in the case is not yet available through the online court system.

LDS Church officials released a statement about the vandalism on Saturday morning.

“At approximately 5 a.m. this morning (Saturday), an individual broke a window and entered the St. George Temple,” said Eric Hawkins, spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“He then proceeded to the fifth floor of the temple, damaging furniture, artwork and other items along the way. After causing additional damage on the fifth floor, he was contained by temple workers (no physical restraint was required) until police arrived and he was arrested.

“The damage is being addressed, but has required the closure of the temple. We are hopeful that normal temple operations will resume later today.”

An update released at about 10:30 a.m. revealed that the temple had reopened for normal operation.
