Man arrested for burglary in Sandy; suspected in others

SANDY, Utah, Aug. 4, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Sandy police have arrested a man wanted in connection with the burglary of an East Bench home. The loss of property and money was estimated at $300,000.

Orlando Reyes Gaitan was arrested Aug. 3 and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. He became a suspect in the July 30 burglary on Eagle View Drive after his car was caught on surveillance video, and he was found in possession of items taken in that robbery and in other cases that are now believed to be related.

Gaitan was on federal probation at the time of his arrest.

Items reported taken from the Sandy home include firearms, a safe, credit cards, a laptop computer and personal identification documents, according to charges.

Gaitan was found while in his car. He was found in possession of several of the missing items. He also had 14 grams of meth, oxycodone pills and drug paraphernalia. Other items found appear to connect Gaitan to other burglaries in Salt Lake Valley.

On Aug. 3, Gaitan was charged with two counts of burglary, a second degree felony; two counts of theft, a second degree felony; one count of theft by receiving stolen property, a second degree felony; one count of purchase, transfer, possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person, a third degree felony; three counts of possession of another’s identification documents, a third degree felony; and one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

The investigation is ongoing.
