SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 7, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police and firefighters responded to the scene of head-on crash between a car and a van just east of 300 West on 600 South at about 6 p.m. Sunday.
The male driver of the sedan was taken to the hospital with critical, but not life-threatening injuries, SLCPD Lt. Mark Buhman said.
Buhman told Gephardt Daily the crash occurred when the sedan came out of a parking lot and turned the wrong way onto 600 South, which is one-way eastbound.
When the sedan crashed into the van, the van rolled and caught on fire.
Police officers were on scene quickly and used fire extinguishers to keep the flames down until the fire department arrived.
Buhman said the van was a limousine-type of vehicle with only two people inside, and both got out safely.
Buhman said it isn’t unusual for drivers to turn the wrong way on 600 South, but they usually realize it quickly as it’s a high-traffic area. He said it’s actually rare for vehicles to collide there.
Officials had 600 South shut down for about an hour to an hour and a half while the area was cleared.
Buhman said the accident is still under investigation.
