HOLLADAY, Utah, Sept. 17, 2020 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has been critically wounded in an officer-involved shooting near 2300 East and 4500 South in Holladay.

The man was identified by Unified Police Department as Eric Pectol, 49, of Layton.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday, a UPD officer was getting gas at the Chevron at 2322 E. 4500 South.

“He either heard or observed, we are not sure yet, a crash at the intersection with a motorcycle and a truck,” Rivera said. “He ran over to see what was going on, the individual on the motorcycle took off running, there was a short foot pursuit, when they did catch up to him there was a fight. From talking with witnesses, it was a pretty aggressive fight with the officers.” Rivera clarified that there was one officer on scene at first but others were in the nearby precinct doing a roll call that they had just completed. As soon as they heard the foot pursuit they responded.

The individual then bent down and picked up a gun that was on the ground, Rivera said, pointed it at the officers and the officers fired at him. It is not clear if the gun belonged to the suspect, but a witness said the suspect said he had a weapon.

The individual was transported ground ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in serious to critical condition, Rivera said.

No officers were reported injured; and Rivera added it’s not clear how many officers fired their weapons.

She said the officer involved critical incident protocol team has been called out. One of the officers was wearing a body camera, Rivera added, and that will be turned over to the protocol team. The protocol team will interview the officers involved and get a statement from them and it will then be established which officer or officers will be placed on leave.

Rivera said if anyone was on scene and was a witness to the incident or has video, they are asked to call Unified PD on 385-468-9686.

The intersection is likely to be shut down for several hours, she added.

Unified Police Department Officer Doug Barney was shot in the same area in January 2016.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information is made available.
