SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 12, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police believe a man found on a TRAX platform Saturday afternoon did not die from foul play.
The investigation is ongoing, but the death does not appear to be suspicious, officials said.
Gary McGrath, a patrol captain with the Utah Transit Authority, said his agency was called to the scene, near 150 South and 400 West, at about 12:30 p.m.
“They approached a male that was seated at the catenary pole there, and discovered him to be deceased,” McGrath said at a news conference.
“They talked with witnesses in the area, they felt that he’d been there about two hours, and there seems to be some evidence to indicate he had been there for about that long.”
McGrath said people on the platform tried to talk to the man, who was unresponsive, and may already have been dead at that time.
“There is obviously a lot of traffic on the platform and that,” McGrath said. “Some folks gathered around him and tried to wake him up, and they had signaled to a business owner in the area to call police.”
The 57-year-old man, whose name has not been released pending notification of relatives, may have been a transient, according to police officials. His identification was from another state.
TRAX service near the site, near the Gateway Mall, was delayed briefly during the investigation.
