BLUFFDALE, Utah, July 24, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A 59-year-old man was taken into custody Friday evening after police responded to a hotel on a medical call, and an armed man allegedly fired a shot with officers nearby.

Bluffdale police were dispatched to Woodsprings Suites, an extended stay hotel near 1478 W. 14000 South, at about 6:43 p.m.

“We got called to a medical (incident) where a male was reported to have shot himself in a bathroom,” Lt. Zach Robinson, Bluffdale Police, told Gephardt Daily.

When officers entered the man’s room to make contact with him, he produced a firearm.

“There was a little bit of a standoff. The officers backed out of the room, and the male fired a round off inside the bathroom.”

“After a short time, the male came to the front door of the hotel room and presented the revolver around the door, with the cylinder open and no rounds in the cylinder. At that time, the officer removed that from his hand, then they took him into custody.”

They did not find anyone in the room who had been shot, Robinson said. They did find that a couple rounds had been fired.

Officers checked the other hotel rooms, and found no injured parties in any room on any floor, Robinson said.

The man was taken to the Salt Lake County jail to be booked.

Officers from multiple nearby agencies also responded to assist, Robinson said.
