TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Nov. 9, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man who fled police, swerving his vehicle at a police officer trying to block his escape, was taken into custody early Friday.

Unified Police Lt. Manfred Lassig said the incident began when officers located a suspect vehicle in a Chevron parking lot in the area of 5600 South and Redwood Road.

“It had fled officers previously in the week when they tried to initiate a stop and they identified the person that was in the vehicle and he had outstanding aggravated felony warrants, aggravated felony assault and fleeing from police officer warrants,” Lassig said.

The vehicle got onto Interstate 215 southbound, Lassig said, and police activated their lights and sirens for the chase.

“We thought we had all the exits covered, but that didn’t happen,” Lassig said. “They got out on State Street, and he pulled into this apartment complex with one way in, one way out. He saw he was at a dead end.”

The suspect exited the vehicle and ran. Police picked him up after a short chase, Lassig said.

The suspect reportedly veered toward an officer while exiting I-215, and drove through a nearby neighborhood briefly before heading east, toward State Street. While on State, he reportedly reached speeds of 70 mph, but due to low traffic, no one was hit or injured.

The suspect’s name has not yet been released. Lassig said that besides the original charges against him, the man likely will face aggravated assault for swerving toward the officer and new drug charges based on materials located in the vehicle.
