MOAB, Utah, July 8, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A man reported as a trespasser at Woody’s Tavern was booked into jail after police say he climbed on the bar’s roof and that of a nearby diner, and tried twice to disarm an arresting officer.
After Moab City Police officers’ arrival, Blaine Edward Schlaline, 34, “ran off into traffic and then into the Millcreek Ravine,” his affidavit says.
Schlaline’s location was discovered a short time later, and an officer told him to stop running, which he did not.
“Officer Bedont caught up to Mr. Schlaline, who again attempted to run, however, Officer Bedont was able to restrain and handcuff him,” the arresting officer’s statement says.
“Upon my arrival to the scene Mr. Schlaline became aggressive and resistant. Officer Bedont and I transported Mr. Schlaline from the sidewalk entrance of the diner to My police vehicle, while we were walking him to my vehicle, Mr. Schlaline firmly gripped my firearm attempting to pull it out of its holster. I grabbed his hand, pushing it down as to prevent him from pulling out my firearm, and then removed his hands.”
Schlaline was put on the ground by several officers, and ordered not to grab the firearm.
“Shortly after we assisted Mr. Schlaline to a standing position to place him in my vehicle, he again grabbed my firearm attempting to pull it out. I removed his hands.”
Officers observed Schlaline had symptoms of intoxication, the affidavit says. He was arrested at 11:35 p.m. Sunday.
Schlaline was booked into the Grand County Jail for investigation of:
- Two counts of disarming a police officer – firearm, a first-degree felony
- Failure to stop at command of law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor
- Disorderly condition after being asked to cease, a class B misdemeanor
- Intoxication, a class C misdemeanor
Schlaline was ordered held without bail.
