Update: Police identify man killed in apparent South Salt Lake TRAX accident

SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 21, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 38-year-old man was killed Saturday morning after accidentally stepping into the path of an oncoming TRAX train around 11:30 a.m.

Police have identified the man as Matthew Jay Evans, of West Valley City.

UTA Police Capt. Jason Peterson said Evans was hit while walking from the Meadowbrook Station in South Salt Lake a few blocks north of 3900 South.

Investigators say Evans was in a designated crosswalk when he was struck, and the incident appeared to be accidental. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later.

TRAX users had to be ferried around the accident site by way of a bus bridge. Full service was restored just before 3 p.m.

Late Sunday afternoon, police officials said the incident is still under investigation.
