UTAH COUNTY, Utah, Nov. 25, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man police say was suicidal led multiple police agencies in a chase on Interstate 15 Sunday morning.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Brady Zaugg told Gephardt Daily the incident began at approximately 8 a.m. when a trooper tried to make a traffic stop on a vehicle that was speeding on northbound I-15 in the Springville area.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers pursued the vehicle, then backed off while Utah County sheriff’s deputies continued the pursuit. When the man entered the construction zone in Lehi, a Department of Public Safety helicopter continued to track him, with troopers on the freeway following without their lights and sirens.

The man drove on and off the freeway multiple times, Zaugg said.

The pursuit ended when the man stopped in a parking lot just off I-15 near the Panda Express at 64 E. 12300 South.

The man exited the vehicle and was waving a knife and putting it to his throat, Zaugg said. He then tried to run from officers.

Officers Tasered the man and transported him to an area hospital to be evaluated.

Zaugg said the man was not injured, but was taken to the hospital for his own safety.

There were no injuries to police officers.

Authorities will take the medical finding into account before determining what charges, if any, will be filed in the case.
