UPDATE: Suspect Arrested In Kearns Playground Stabbing

KEARNS, Utah, May 30, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have arrested a man in connection with a stabbing at an elementary school in Kearns Monday morning.

Joey Martinez, 34, was arrested in connection to the stabbing of a 36-year-old man on the playground of West Kearns Elementary.

Investigators from Unified Police told Gephardt Daily the man had been playing basketball with an acquaintance around 10:45 a.m.

During the game, the stabbing suspect began to argue with a woman who was watching from the sidelines.

After the exchange of words, the suspect began to argue with the 36-year-old with whom he was playing basketball.

Police said the suspect then pulled a knife and stabbed the victim in the back before running off.

The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition but was later upgraded to fair.

Investigators say they so know the suspect and the victim had argued earlier in the day but are not releasing many details because the investigation is still ongoing.
