KANAB, Utah, June 16, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 21-year-old man is facing two felony charges in connection with a fatal boating accident Friday on Lake Powell.

Triston Brady Harrison was arrested on suspicion of:

  • Automobile homicide criminal negligence DUI of alcohol/drugs, a second-degree felony
  • DUI with serious bodily injury by negligent operation, a third-degree felony
  • Failure to maintain proper lookout on boat, a class C misdemeanor

According to a probable cause statement filed in 6th District Court in Kanab, Harrison is accused of operating a boat on Lake Powell while intoxicated.

The boat struck a rock, beaching the watercraft and causing a female passenger to be ejected. The victim was fatally injured when she landed on the shore.

In the affidavit of probable cause, an officer with Utah State Parks and Recreation stated that Harrison was negligent in his operation of the boat and was aware of, but disregarded, “a substantial and unjustifiable risk to the passengers on the watercraft.”

The officer stated that Harrison smelled of alcohol, failed seated field sobriety tests and blew over the legal limit on the intoxilyzer.

“His impairment had a strong impact on his decision making and vessel operation,” the officer stated.

Gephardt Daily will continue to follow this story and provide updates as information becomes available.
