SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man threatened a Salt Lake City Dollar Tree cashier with a chain Saturday evening after he tried to purchase a bottle of Mountain Dew and his card was declined.

The incident occurred at the dollar store at 812 E. 200 South just after 7:15 p.m., the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release.

The suspect, Tito Joaquin Smith, 32, was attempting to purchase a 2-liter Mountain Dew from the store when his card did not go through.

“He became angry and pulled a large chain out of his backpack and began swinging it above his head asking the cashier if she wanted him to ‘take her out,'” the news release said. “Smith left with the Mountain Dew and was spotted by an officer at 700 East 300 South.”

Smith was taken into custody and booked for robbery, officials said.
