MIDVALE, Utah, Feb. 10, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two Midvale parents are been arrested on felony child abuse charges after officials say their baby and toddler were found to be dangerously malnourished.
Andrea Tyler Kendrick, 26, and Antoine Torrez Scott, 27, were charged Friday after an investigation that began in September. Unified Police Department officials, assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service, arrested the two.
The children — who were age 9 months and age 19 months in September, according to court documents — were taken for a wellness check. A UPD statement said the attending physician raised concerns.
“The parents ignored the physician’s recommendation to immediately take the two children to Primary Children’s Hospital,” the statement says.
The children are identified as as An.S. and A.S. in court documents, and are now age 2 years and age 14 months. A probable cause statement says that at the autumn appointment, Kendrick and Scott “expressed concern about An.S.’s ribs sticking out.”
The physician determined “that An.S. and A.S. were profoundly malnourished and classified both children as failure to thrive due to lack of food being provided… and told Andrea Kendrick and Antoine Torrez Scott, Sr. to take An.S. and A.S. to the hospital to ensure their safety.”
When the doctor contacted the Department of Child and Family Services the next day and learned the children had not been taken to the hospital, police accompanied DCFS officials to the family’s residence, and found the children malnourished and lethargic, the probable cause statement says.
“The children were taken into custody by the State of Utah,” the UPD statement says. “The children are now being medically treated and are recovering from their malnourished state.”
Kendrick and Scott have each been charged with two counts of child abuse, a second-degree felony.
