MILLARD COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 16, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — One lane of northbound Interstate 15 is closed four miles south of Kanosh in Millard County after a trailer caught fire, igniting a grass fire Sunday morning.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Battenfield told Gephardt Daily the incident happened near mile marker 142 at approximately 8 a.m., and originally all northbound lanes had to be shut down.

A car hauler semi experienced a mechanical failure leading to the trailer catching on fire, Battenfield said.

The driver was able to separate the tractor from the trailer and move it away, but the trailer and the six cars it was carrying were destroyed.

The fire from the trailer spread to the adjacent hillside but winds kept it alongside the freeway and fire crews were able to contain it before it spread into the valley; approximately 15 acres were affected.

Both northbound lanes were closed from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., at which point the left lane was reopened. Fire crews are still on scene mopping up the hot spots. As of 4:30 p.m. the right lane remained closed; it is unknown when it will reopen.

There were no injuries as a result of the fires.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
