MILLCREEK, Utah, Dec. 16, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office has found there is probable cause to charge a suspect with first-degree felony murder after a man was stabbed to death in his Millcreek apartment.

Alaa Alkhatawi, 46, was found murdered Dec. 9 at 3365 S. 900 East, according to the Unified Police Department.

Early in the investigation, detectives identified Karrar Suhail, 25, as a person of interest in the crime, and the DA’s office is now preparing to charge him with murder.

“At 7:11 p.m. Friday, Millcreek officers were called to the scene on an unknown problem. During an exterior search of the building, officers could see evidence of blood inside the home,” UPD Lt. Brian Lohrke told Gephardt Daily.

UPD Violent Crimes Unit and Forensics Investigators have been collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses in connection with the murder of Alkhatawi.

Suhail was known to be an associate of Alkhatawi and was placed at the residence around the time of the killing. Detectives estimate the homicide to have taken place sometime between Thursday, Dec. 8 and Friday, Dec. 9.

The case was presented to the Salt Lake County DA’s Office Thursday, and probable cause was found to charge Suhail with murder. The DA’s Office will now prepare for prosecution.

Suhail was arrested on unrelated charges earlier in the week and is currently in the Salt Lake County Jail.
