SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 17, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A Millcreek man was taken into custody June 11 after he allegedly admitted to an officer that he had choked and hit his seven-months pregnant girlfriend.

Alexander Sowa, 27, was arrested after an officer with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an active domestic violence situation at a Millcreek apartment.

According to a court affidavit, the officer spoke with the victim and with Sowa separately, and the victim told the officer that Sowa choked her, pulled her hair, and pinned her down.

Sowa agreed to being questioned and said he and the victim are engaged, and he knows that she is pregnant.

“Alexander told me the fight was over beer, and he grabbed the victim by the throat,” the officer wrote.

Sowa said a fist fight ensued. He also said he “lightly choked” his fiancee “so she would get some sense.”

The victim gave the officer a slightly different version of what led up to the physical violence, saying the fight was because she took too long returning to the apartment and Sowa accused her of cheating.

She said her young daughter reached for some popcorn while the argument was going on, and Sowa hit the child on the side of her head.

After that, Sowa choked the woman and she became lightheaded and saw “lines,” according to the statement. Sowa allegedly then grabbed her by the hair and neck and they fell to the ground.

Sowa has been charged with:

  • Aggravated assault, a third-degree felony
  • Child abuse involving physical injury, a class A misdemeanor
  • Intoxication, a class C misdemeanor

The officer stated that Sowa “smelled strongly of beer.”
