MILLCREEK, Utah, July 1, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Unified Police Department responded to reports of a 42-year-old man with a gun Friday morning in a Millcreek neighborhood.

When officers arrived, the man reportedly pointed the gun at them, but then responded to verbal commands and surrendered, said UPD spokesman Det. Ken Hansen.

Hansen said that officials were called just before noon Friday to a residential neighborhood in the area of 3100 South 800 East.

Hansen said police had a report from a couple of callers in the area that a man was walking around and pointing a handgun at people.

“Our officers responded, and he pointed a gun at our officers,” Hansen said. “Our officers responded with verbal commands and he finally put the gun down and surrendered.

“It’s a very positive ending where no one is hurt and no one at all is harmed. I’m sure people in the neighborhood were obviously alarmed by having a man walking around with a gun.”

Hansen said the situation only lasted a few minutes before the suspect was taken into custody. He was checked out by medical then taken to Salt Lake County Jail.

“We are looking for additional evidence because he appears to be high on drugs, to make sure there was nothing left behind, Hansen said. “So if he had drugs and he dropped those drugs, we don’t want a child or anyone else to find them.”
