MOAB, Utah, Jan. 19, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 27-year-old man was killed on State Route 191 Wednesday evening after the semi truck he was driving struck a rocky mountainside in Moab Canyon.

The crash happened at mile post 132, just north of Arches National Park, when the semi and trailer drifted off the right shoulder into a curve, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol. The driver was unable to negotiate the curve and struck the rock wall mountainside, the news release said.

The driver was ejected through the front windshield, and was pronounced dead at the scene. A witness told troopers the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed down the canyon, though the exact speed has yet to be determined.

The preliminary investigation does not suggest drugs or alcohol were contributing factors to the crash.

The truck, which was carrying onions, was headed for New Mexico.

The driver’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members.
