MOAB, Utah, March 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The Moab City Police Department has arrested two people wanted by Greeley, Colorado, police in connection with an armed home invasion and aggravated motor vehicle theft.
Moab police were notified at 3:17 p.m. Friday that suspects Michael A. Vieyra, 25, and Katherine Cathey, 35, were believed to be staying at a Days Inn on Moab’s Main Street.
Officers verified that the suspects were checked in, and found a white GMC pickup that had been reported stolen Thursday out of Montrose, Colorado.
Moab officers maintained surveillance through Friday night, and at 9 a.m. Saturday, they evacuated motel guests and staffers before attempting to contact the suspects.
Just after the evacuation was complete, Vieyra exited the motel room and was confronted by officers. He returned to the room and attempted to barricade the door, the Moab Police Department statement says.
Officers breached the door and pursued Vieyra, who had fled through a window. Cathey, who was in the room, was detained without incident.
“Michael (Vieyra) ran through the parking lot, jumped a fence and unsuccessfully attempted to enter a parked vehicle in an adjacent lot,” the statement says. “He then entered a second parked vehicle and hid until a citizen directed officers to him.
“Officers approached the vehicle, extracted Michael and took him into custody without further incident. Both suspects are incarcerated at the Grand County Jail.”
Assisting the Moab City Police were the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Utah Highway Patrol.
