Motorcyclist killed, passenger injured in Smithfield crash

SMITHFIELD, Utah, April 21, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A motorcyclist was killed and his passenger hospitalized after a collision with a pickup truck Saturday afternoon.

According to a news release from Smithfield City Police Department, the crash occurred at about 3:48 p.m. at the intersection of 300 South and Main Street.

Smithfield Police and Smithfield Fire departments were dispatched to the scene, where an officer began CPR on the motorcycle operator until medical personnel arrived.

The motorcycle operator, identified as Darryl Nelson, 55, was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His passenger, who has not been identified, was also transported to the hospital. The extent of the injuries and the individual’s condition are not known at this time.

During the investigation, it was learned that the motorcycle operator and passenger were northbound on Main Street,” the release said. “The driver of a smaller, white colored pickup, who was driving south on Main Street, turned east onto 300 South in front of the motorcycle rider.”

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

Police said the investigation is still underway, and charges are pending.
