PROVO, Utah, July 5, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A number of people were injured after fireworks from the Stadium of Fire show strayed into the crowd and onto the field Thursday night at Lavell Edwards Stadium on the BYU campus.

As many as three people were conveyed by ambulance to a hospital after the incident, said Janna-Lee Holland, Provo Police Department public information officer.

Others were treated on scene, she said.

The total number of casualties was not clear, but videos taken and since posted online by attendees show some of the errant fireworks struck members of a marching band on the field at the time.

The mishap came just after the jet flyover at the stadium when a number of fireworks “went sideways into the crowd,” she said.

Holland said the exact nature and severity of the injuries was not readily available.

The show stopped for about 20 minutes after the approximately 8:30 p.m. malfunction, she said, and was still under way at 10:30 p.m.

At least 40,000 people were at the sold-out show, Holland said.
