MURRAY, Utah, Oct. 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 43-year-old man was arrested late Monday night after he allegedly hit multiple vehicles and fled police.

Ian Nathaniel Shaw was arrested for investigation of:

  • Failure to stop or respond at command of police, a third-degree felony
  • Obstruction of justice, a third-degree felony
  • Reckless driving, a third-degree felony
  • Driving under the influence, first offense in 10 years, a third-degree felony
  • Failure to comply with duties at vehicle accident with property damage, a class B misdemeanor

If the case goes to trial, the county attorney’s office will determine charges.

The affidavit was filed by an officer of the Murray City Police Department. It is not clear if charges will be filed in other cities where vehicles were damaged.

“I was on duty and on patrol when I overheard on the radio that a white GMC AT4 hit another vehicle in Murray and fled the area,” the statement says. “The white GMC was said to have front end damage. As I was looking for the vehicle I also heard on the radio that the same vehicle may have hit multiple other vehicles in other surrounding cities and fled the scenes on those cases too.

“It was reported he allegedly swerved towards a person walking their dog, too, in Sandy city.

“I located the vehicle near 5400 South and Vine street. The vehicle ran a red light prior to me initiating my red and blue emergency lights. I then activated my red and blue emergency lights and siren.

“The vehicle fled from me and didn’t come to a complete stop until pulling into the parking lot of IMC at 5121 S. Cottonwood St. The male, Ian Shaw, was arrested. Ian Shaw refused a blood draw even after being presented with a valid blood draw warrant.”

In suggesting Shaw be held without bail, the statement says, “Ian Shaw hit multiple vehicles in various cities across Salt Lake County. He also swerved towards a pedestrian who was walking his dog in Sandy city which caused the pedestrian to dive out of the way. Ian then fled from officers when a traffic stop was attempted.”

Shaw’s bail was set at $5,000, and he is no longer listed among Salt Lake County jail system inmates.
