Murray Mayor Ted Eyre dies of cancer

MURRAY, Utah, Aug. 25, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Murray City Mayor Ted Eyre, 71, passed away Friday morning from complications of cancer.

Eyre began his term in 2014, according to a statement released by the city.

He attended his last official city meeting on Aug. 16, the statement said, a meeting “that will always be remembered by those who were lucky enough to be in attendance,” said Deputy Mayor Janet Towers.

“Mayor Eyre’s mark on the city touched so many. He had a deep love and commitment for the city and employees. This love and commitment was displayed in everything he did as mayor.”

“He was an approachable leader and had a great sense of humor,” Towers said,
noting his “optimistic attitude, humility, determination and personal level of excellence.”

She said, “Eyre is much loved by Murray citizens, city employees, council members and other city mayors and officials, and will be deeply missed.”

The statement said that city enhancements, accomplishments and projects from Eyre’s term include:

• Enhancements to Murray Park, including Wi-Fi throughout the park, six pickleball
courts, an outdoor exercise area, new restrooms and the newly remodeled Murray
Park Amphitheater
• Business developments including a major expansion of Fashion Place Mall, the
University of Utah Midvalley Health Center, the Cottonwood Medical Clinic,
expansion of The Orthopedic Special Hospital, and ongoing construction of the
Intermountain Gardner Transformation Center
• Acquisition of the historic Murray Theater, Murray Chapel and Murray Mansion
• Groundwork laid for acquisition of many properties in the downtown
redevelopment project area for future construction of a new fire station and city
hall
• And adoption of a new general city plan

Under Murray’s strong mayor-council form of government, the chair of the City Council will serve as acting mayor. Diane Turner holds that position, and will serve until a new mayor is elected and sworn into office on Jan. 2 of next year.

Eyre, a Wyoming native who attended Brigham Young University and San Bernardino Valley College, served in the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam flying an aircraft transport.

Eyre later became a pilot for Western Airlines, which was acquired by Delta
Airlines in 1986. He and his wife, Ruth, relocated in 1987 to Murray, where he retired as a Delta Airlines captain in 2005.

Eyre and his wife are the parents of four children and grandparents of five, the city’s statement said. Funeral services are pending.
