HERRIMAN, Utah, Nov. 20, 2022 (Gephardt Daily) — Police say a 38-year-old Herriman man fired shots at police and neighboring residences before being shot and killed by officers Sunday night.
Herriman police responded about 3:45 p.m. to the area of 13000 South and 5100 West, where a man had called 911 and told dispatchers that he intended to end his life, police said.
The man had a rifle and had fired shots inside his residence, according to police. Residents at Herriman Towne Center were asked to shelter in place while officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution, Deputy Chief Cody Stromberg said.
At some point, the man started shooting from inside his home at other residences, and police determined nearby residents needed to be evacuated, Stromberg said.
“About 9:15 p.m., our tactical units were working to evacuate residents out of nearby surrounding residences to the incident location. Our subject broke windows out of his residence and opened fire on those tactical units multiple times,” he said.
“During the course of their evacuations, our tactical units showed an amazing amount of restraint, but at some point, the threat developed to where they felt they needed to take action,” Stromberg said.
The man was fatally injured when tactical units returned fire, police said. He was a member of the Utah National Guard, according to police.
No other injuries were reported.
“We worked for several hours with his family, with members of his National Guard unit, with our negotiators to try and provide him some options to help him see a different path,” Stromberg said. “Unfortunately, that didn’t work out.”
Police were in contact with the man “almost constantly throughout this process, trying to provide him with resources and alternatives,” he said. “But he just saw it a certain way and had chosen how it was going to end.”
The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Unified Police Department, Stromberg said.
