PARK CITY, UTAH – October 4, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — Sam Jackenthal, a 16-year-old freeskiing champion and Park City native has died from injuries sustained during a practice run at an Australian ski camp in early September.

According to Team Park City United, Jackenthal was in training at the Perisher Resort in New South Wales when he suffered a traumatic head injury.

He’d been in intensive care unit of a Canberra hospital for the last few weeks and passed late Friday night.

The Park City teen was considered a rising star in the world of competitive skiing. Last winter he took top honors at the United States Ski Association’s Junior Nationals, winning for performances in halfpipe, big air and slope style competitions.

Chris Haslock, a coach for Team Park City United, called Jackenthal a treasured member of the team and “one who always brought the highest level of competition, character and humor, and camaraderie with him to the hill.”

The teen was surrounded by friends and family at the time of his death.

Memorial services are yet to be announced.
