PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Feb. 8, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — New details have been released after a man was taken into custody Thursday night by a Utah County SWAT team.

Nicholas Haun, 37, was booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of:

  • Possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, a second-degree felony
  • Aggravated assault, a third-degree felony
  • Two counts of obstruction of justice, a class A misdemeanor
  • Possession of a deadly weapon with intent to assault, a class A misdemeanor
  • Carrying a dangerous weapon under the influence of alcohol/drugs, a class B misdemeanor

Pleasant Grove police were dispatched to a residence on Wednesday after  dispatch operators got a 911 call that “advised police dispatch to ‘Send help fast’ and to ‘trace the call,'” according to a probable cause statement.

“While en route officers were advised that the female stated a man was holding a gun to her head and demanding her phone,” the statement says. “Officers arrived and set up a perimeter around the residence. Officers were able to make phone contact with the female victim, and she was able to safely escape the home. The female was interviewed and it was found that her and her father, Nicholas Haun, had gotten into an argument.

“During the course of the argument Nicholas became extremely irate, and violent. The female then explained that Nicholas left the room but returned shortly with a silver and tan handgun. The female then reported that Nicholas held the gun to her head, and demanded that she give him her phone.”

The woman said Haun was “highly intoxicated, and was not in the right
state of mind.”

While officers interviewed the woman, Haun exited the home through the backyard, the statement says.

“Officers located Nicholas, and gave him direct orders to stop and show his hands. Nicholas failed to due so and fled from officers. A search for Nicholas was performed by several police agencies, for several hours, but Nicholas was not located.”

On Thursday, PGPD detectives received information from the son of a woman police identified as Haun’s wife. The stepson said Haun had returned to the address, the residence of his wife, daughter and the stepson, at which he had been staying for several months after arriving from out of state.

The stepson told police that Haun was “highly intoxicated and agitated” and “had immediate access to multiple weapons in the home. With this confirmed information, once again a perimeter was established and detectives drafted an arrest warrant, and search warrant for the residence.”

A SWAT team breached the front door, and Haun was taken into custody without incident, Pleasant Grove Police captain Britt Smith told Gephardt Daily on Thursday.

Officers searching the house found a shotgun, an AR15 rifle, a pistol, several magazines, and ammunition, the probable cause statement says. Haun’s criminal history, with felony convictions, prohibits him from possessing firearms.

Haun is being held in lieu of posting $20,000 bail, and if released, is required to “stay away from alleged victim’s residence.”
