DRAPER, Utah, Jan. 11, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah State Prison remained on lockdown Thursday after a fight broke out the night before in a maximum-security area used to house prisoners with gang affiliations.
New details revealed Thursday included the facts that eight inmates were involved, and they used prisoner-made weapons, which officials recovered after the fight.
The three badly injured inmates — one flown by AirMed to University Hospital and two taken by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray — were in stable condition Thursday, the statement said. The names of those injured or involved in the fight are being withheld during the investigation.
No correctional officers or other staff members were injured.
The fight began at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday in the Uinta Facility, a statement said.
According to scanner communications, multiple stabbings occurred.
Utah Department of Corrections’ Law Enforcement Bureau is conducting an investigation into the incident in conjunction with the Unified Police Department.
Uinta Facility is the Utah State Prison’s maximum security facility, and also houses Intake, Receiving and Orientation departments, and the parole violator program. The Uinta facility currently houses about 650 male inmates.
