Official: Jackie Biskupski Elected Salt Lake City Mayor

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City now knows the name of its next mayor: Jackie Biskupski.

Salt Lake City’s board of canvassers on Tuesday certified the final election result and announced the results. The final vote count: 19,986 Biskupski, 18,702 Becker.

It had been a close vote. After the Nov. 3 election, Biskupski was ahead of incumbent Mayor Ralph Becker by just 1,284 votes, but some mail-in votes remained to be counted.

Both Biskupski and Becker were at the Salt Lake City-County Building to hear the results.

Anticipating a win, Biskupski has announced an open victory reception for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 17, at the Utah Pride Center, 255 East 400 South, Suite 200, Salt Lake City. Biskupski will be Salt Lake City’s first openly gay mayor.

Biskupski has said one of her first priorities will be requesting a meeting with officials from the Church of Latter-day Saints regarding the church’s recent a announcements of membership policies regarding gay couples and their children.
