UTAH COUNTY, Utah, July 6, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A deadly domestic argument claimed two lives in a Utah County campground early Saturday morning – one of the victim’s dying by his own hand, while the second was mortally wounded by a stray bullet fired when the man committed suicide.
According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting took place about midnight in a Maple Bench Campground in Payson Canyon, where the victims, a man and woman, had been engaged in a “volatile argument” for several hours.
Investigators said just before the shooting, the man was seated in a vehicle and the woman stood at the window.
“While the woman was talking, the male used a handgun and shot himself in the head,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
“Investigators believe the round from that gunshot left the vehicle and struck the woman in the neck. The gunshot appears to have been immediately fatal to to the man. The woman was critically injured,” the UCSO statement said. “Medical responders with Payson Fire & Rescue, along with AirMed responded, but they were unable to save the woman. Her death appears to have been accidental.”
Both bodies were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Taylorsville. Their names are being withheld pending notification of family.
