KEARNS, Utah, Oct. 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Officials are at the scene of an officer-involved shooting outside a home in Kearns.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said the incident began with an armed robbery at the Fiesta Olé restaurant, at 4098 W. 5415 South.

Minutes later officers arrived at a home near 4270 West 5700 South where the officer-involved shooting took place.

“Officers responded, detectives got involved. It was within 20 minutes that they came to this house,” Rivera said. “They believed they knew who the suspect was from their short investigation.

“They got here, there was a confrontation. There was a weapon involved. There was an officer-involved shooting, and that’s about all the information I can provide because it’s so preliminary.”

The suspect, whose name has yet to be released, was critically wounded and rushed to a nearby trauma center by ground ambulance. His current condition is unknown.

The officers who were involved in the shooting were taken from the scene and were undergoing questioning, according to Rivera.

Rivera described the incident as ongoing, as police were attempting to make contact with a person believed to be inside the residence. Rivera said it was unclear if that person was involved in the robbery or knew the suspect in any way.

Police could be on the scene for quite some time, Rivera said, asking those who could avoid the neighborhood to do so.

The Salt Lake City Police Department will head up the investigation due the officer-involved shooting.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this breaking news story as information becomes available.
