WELLINGTON, Utah, Sept. 11, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Officials in Carbon County have identified the man who was shot and killed Tuesday night during an officer-involved shooting in Wellington, a small town located about 7 miles southeast of Price.
Police Chief Rory Bradley said Wellington resident Bobby Ray Duckworth, 26, died during an altercation with a Wellington police officer
who was responding to a call about a “suicidal male.”
The incident happened at about 7 p.m. near 900 E. Railroad Ave. Bradley said during a Wednesday morning news conference.
“Mr. Duckworth sustained fatal injuries resulting from the altercation,” Bradley said. “I’d like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased as well as our Wellington City officer and his family.”
The officer — now on paid administrative leave — was a reserve police officer for Wellington, and works full time for another law enforcement agency. Wellington has about 2,000 residents. Bradley is his department’s only staff employee, assisted by several reserve officers, he said.
“This is an unfortunate situation for all involved,” Bradley said of the shooting.
The incident is being investigated by a multi-agency team including the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, the Price City Police Department, the Emery County Sheriff’s Office and the Carbon County Attorney’s Office.
Sheriff Jeff Wood, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, said the involved officer was wearing a body camera, and footage is being reviewed before its release in the coming days.
The scene remains active, and the area will be closed to the public for much of Wednesday, Wood said.
