IRON COUNTY, Utah, Feb. 27, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The bodies of a Sandy man and his two young children were found Monday after an aerial search located the wreckage of his small plane, reported missing on Sunday.

The single-engine Cessna 172 was spotted at about 11 a.m. by a police helicopter searching the lower Bear Valley area, about 16 miles northwest of Panguitch.

Search and rescue crews had been looking for a missing plane carrying Randall Wells, and his children, Asher, 8, and Sara, 3. Wells was reportedly flying home from a wedding in Arizona.

He had been expected to land at Salt Lake International Airport at about 10 p.m. Saturday. Search crews were out at first light Sunday morning.

Wells, who preferred to be called “Randy,” was the bishop of the Mount Jordan Third Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  1. What saddens me is the church talks about preparedness. This bishop was not prepared. I have hard time giving to a guy who one owns a plane. Must have a lot of money to own one! I sure cannot afford one. Why did this guy not have the necessary insurances to cover his butt if something happened to him like the church preaches. We are very well covered in my household if a tragic event happens with us. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out. My parents taught us that.

    • Kind of a harsh response to such a tragic event. ???? We all are just doing the best we can … Each of us having different strengths and weaknesses. My heart goes out to the wife and mother who is experiencing this heartbreaking loss.

    • Easy to judge but you don’t know. Randy was amazing. His extended family are amazing. The circumstances you don’t know. His giant heart you do not know. Christ does, he knows you too. We are all sinful beggars at his feet. May God be with you and the dear Wells families. Love, a friend who knows them.

    • Just because he was piloting and flying a plane doesn’t mean that he owned the airplane. My husband is a pilot and we do not own a personal plane. If we want to go fly, we rent it by the hour and simply return it when done. That may only cost around 100.- an hour or so depending on the place or plane you rent. He may have taken a friend’s plane as well. Who knows….

    • At this time, the family does not needed to be scholded for not being “prepared.” Im sure they did not set out on that plane ride thinking they would crash. This has nothing to do with the fact that he was a bishop and a member of the LDS church, so that can be left out. Please do not talk negatively or down on this man for the sake of his now widdowed wife and family members, whom I actually know……
