OGDEN, Utah, July 31, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Ogden City Police Chief Eric Young is retiring, ending his tenure presiding over a 60% reduction in serious crime.

Young spent all 32 years of his law enforcement career at OCPD, the city said Wednesday in announcing his departure. He was appointed chief in January 2021 after nine years as deputy chief.

“As a result of innovative policing and instituting industry leading best practices, there has been an over 60% reduction in Part 1 Crime in Ogden City since 2016,” says the city’s press release. Part 1 crimes are the most serious offenses, largely crimes against individuals.

Young was honored as the “Chief of the Year” in 2022 by the Utah Police Chief’s Association and in 2023 by the state’s Fraternal Order of Police Association. His resignation is effective Aug. 15.

Young worked his way up through the ranks, beginning as a community policing officer.

“Young was an early advocate for the School Resource Officer program, and led out on the program’s growth for our state. Young was also a strong backer of officers’ mental health and peer support systems.

“Recently, Young has been a visionary in homeless advocacy, building a team of homeless services advocates who lead the way with compassionate enforcement and bring services to those who need them most.”

“Chief Young embodies the highest standards of professionalism in community policing and has built a team of exceptional officers to carry on an elite level of service to our residents,” Mayor Ben Nadolski said. “He has built this department to a level of excellence we can all be proud of.”

Jake Sube, Young’s deputy chief the last three years and 24-year OCPD veteran, will serve as interim chief during the selection process for naming a new chief.
