Ogden police chief to Hispanic community: Documentation status not our concern

OGDEN, Utah, June 15, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt has addressed the Hispanic community, letting them know that “local city policing operates under city and state laws. Your documentation status is not our concern. Our concern is to provide a safe, and orderly environment.”

Watt went on to say that those in the Hispanic community who are doing the right things have nothing to fear from the police. However, in the case of those who are predators, or who harm society in an illegal manner of a serious nature, the police reserve all rights to use all means and applicable laws, including local, state and federal resources, to remove them from the community.

“If you are undocumented and a victim or witness and want to report a crime, we encourage you to come forward to help make the community safer. Your documented status is irrelevant to us. We want to promote a safe environment for all,” he said.

The statement is on Ogden Police Department’s Facebook page.
