OGDEN, Utah, June 4, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The Ogden Police Department wants the public to be aware of an email that looks as though it was sent by the Ogden City Council and tries to scare the recipient into buying a home security system.

“The email uses scare tactics claiming drastic increases in crime and provides a link for the reader to purchase a residential home security system,” OPD posted Monday on Facebook. “THIS IS A FRAUD AND IS FALSE.”

The post goes on to say that in 2018, serious crime in Ogden decreased by 20.1%, and 2019 is continuing the downward trend in crime.

Scams or “phishing” attempts often have the following features:

  • Offers things that are too good to be true
  • Tries to get you to act using a sense of urgency
  • Has suspicious hyperlinks or attachments
  • Comes from unusual senders

If you have questions about any information you receive from Ogden City, you can call 801-629-8000, where you can access every department within the city and verify any information personally with staff, the post said.
