OGDEN, Utah, Sept. 21, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A 67-year-old man was transported to a hospital after his pickup truck was broadsided by another on Wednesday afternoon in Ogden.

The crash happened at Washington Boulevard and 7th Street at approximately 3:20 p.m., said Lt Brian Eynon, Ogden City Police Department.

Eynon said a 16-year-old female was driving a gray pickup truck southbound on Washington Boulevard when the man, who was also driving a gray pickup truck, tried to make a left turn from northbound Washington onto 7th Street.

The man said he was in the intersection when the light turned red, and was expecting the teenager to stop, but she didn’t, and broadsided the man’s pickup on the passenger side.

The man had leg injuries and was transported to an area hospital by ground ambulance. Eynon said the man had to be extricated from the pickup because of how “crunched up” the vehicle was. The teenager was not injured, and there were no passengers in the trucks.

Traffic in that area was directed around the accident, and the scene was cleared by 6 p.m.

Sheila DeRoboam works at the Maverik on the corner of Washington and 7th, and arrived at work shortly after the accident occurred.

“There were two pickup trucks. One was completely smashed up,” she said. “They were using heavy equipment to get the people out of the other truck. It was pretty bad. Trucks usually hold up better.”

She described the general scene as a “big crowd-getter” with people sitting on the grass, watching as emergency crews worked to help the vehicles’ occupants and get the street cleared.

“An officer came in a while later and said some people were taken to the hospital, but that was all he knew,” she said.

DeRoboam sees what happens at the intersection on a daily basis.

“It’s horrible. Too many drivers try to beat the light to get across Washington,” she said. “A pedestrian was hit recently — he came in here on crutches.”

DeRoboam shook her head and looked toward the street.

“It seems like something happens almost every three days,” she said. “People need to be more careful.”
