SANDY, Utah, April 13, 2023 (Gephardt Daily) — A 20-year-old man is dead after a fiery crash Thursday morning on Interstate 15 in Sandy.
The single-car crash, involving a silver Subaru WRX, was first reported about 5:48 a.m. after the northbound vehicle struck a traffic divider at the 11400 South exit, according to Utah Highway Patrol information.
The driver, alone in the vehicle, “was taking the off ramp when it drifted into the center gore area and struck the crash cushion with the front of the vehicle,” the UHP statement says.
First responders indicated the front of the car was on fire moments after the accident.
“Despite responders’ best efforts, the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene,” the UHP news release says. “He was pronounced deceased by fire personnel upon their arrival.”
During the investigation and clean-up, the off-ramp was closed for approximately 3 hours.
Authorities are urging all drivers to remember the importance of wearing a seatbelt, as it can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash, the UHP notice says.
“The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the driver during this difficult time.”
