SAN JUAN COUNTY, Utah (July 1, 2019) — One person died and another lost an arm in a crash early Monday afternoon on State Route 191 about 10 miles north of Monticello.

The accident occurred at 12:21 p.m. near milepost 82, according to a Utah Department of Public Safety news release.

A Ford F-350 four-door flatbed truck pulling a cargo box trailer was heading south in a construction zone. Four people were in the F-350.

The truck “was traveling over the posted construction zone speed,” the release states.

A Peterbilt semi, pulling a 53-foot box trailer, was stopped in traffic because of the construction zone, and a pilot car was performing traffic control.

“The F-350’s driver didn’t see that the Peterbilt was stopped in the lane with its air brakes locked. The driver of the F-350 tried to go around to the left, but struck the semi’s box trailer,” the news release says.

The impact severely damaged the passenger side of the F-350, spinning it around the front of the semi, where it struck the semi’s front end. The out-of-control F-350 then spun down the shoulder of the road until it came to a rest.

“The front right passenger had an arm cut off and was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition,” the news release states. “The right rear passenger died on impact.”

The driver and the left rear passenger were transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

“Along with speeding, impairment is suspected as another contributing factor in the crash,” the news release says.
