OREM, Utah, March 29, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — An Orem chapel belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was “significantly damaged” early Friday morning in what investigators tell Gephardt Daily was an act of arson.

Orem Police Department Sgt. Brian Luangsawasdi told Gephardt Daily that police were called to the church at 1230 N. 9450 West about 1:54 a.m.

When officers arrived they found a fire burning inside the facility, but were able use their fire extinguishers to knock down the flames before firefighters could arrive.

“Based on evidence found at the scene” police quickly fanned out to check other churches and came upon a person of interest they believe was interrupted while attempting to break into a second Latter-day Saint church facility at 2000 North and  965 West.

The person of interest is an adult female. Luangsawasdi said she was taken into custody and was being questioned by investigators.

The full extent of the damage has yet to be determined.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
