OREM, Utah, Oct. 12, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — An Orem Police official has released the identity of a man who died overnight when his car hit a power pole on Geneva Road.

The victim of the single-car crash was James Royal Griffin, 35, whose driver license listed him as a Pleasant Grove resident.

The accident was reported just after 2 a.m. by a Utah County deputy who either witnessed the crash or came upon it shortly afterward, Orem Police Sgt. Brian Luangsawasdi told Gephardt Daily. Emergency crews responded to the scene, at 400 N. Geneva Road.

“He was southbound on Geneva, and for whatever reason, he didn’t negotiate the turn,” Luangsawasdi said. “The car’s driver’s side hit a power pole.”

Griffin was alive on the scene, but trapped in his car. The multi-hour extrication was difficult, and Griffin died before he could be freed from the vehicle.

Orem Fire Battalion Chief Robbie Asbell told Gephardt Daily that the extrication was among the most difficult he had seen in his career.

Luangsawasdi said police were on the scene until about 7 a.m., and the investigation into Griffin’s death is ongoing, with speed being investigated as a possible factor.
