PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 3, 2023 (Gephardt Daily) — A Park City Mountain employee died Monday after officials say a toppled pine tree caused him to fall from a ski lift.
The 29-year-old Millcreek resident fell about 25 feet into a ravine of deep snow, according to a news release Tuesday from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. The man’s identity was not released.
The Park City Mountain Ski Patrol contacted the sheriff’s office about 11:25 a.m. Monday requesting a helicopter to hoist the unresponsive man, according to the news release.
Investigators say a pine tree fell onto the Short Cut chairlift cable, causing the on-duty employee to fall. All other lift passengers were evacuated safely, resort officials said.
“Unfortunately, the man was found unresponsive; lifesaving efforts were attempted by Park City Mountain Ski Patrol, but he died,” according to the sheriff’s office.
“The entire Summit County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends, the Park City Mountain Ski Patrol team that worked to save one of their own, and the entire Park City Mountain team as they grieve this tragic loss.”
Park City Mountain officials released a statement following the accidental death.
“The Park City Mountain team — as well as the entire Vail Resorts team — extend our deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of our team member,” says a statement from Deirdra Walsh, Park City Mountain vice president and CEO.
“We are all deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and we will be providing support for our employees as we grieve this devastating loss.”
